Cigars

A few years ago I was at a local auction in Knutsford and a couple of boxes of cigars came up as a lot. My father in law enjoys a smoke so I took a punt, 50 cigars from a maker I'd never heard of - Arturo Fuente- 2 boxes. I paid £100 for the 2 boxes plus fees. Not a bad deal I thought only a couple of £ per smoke, and if only half are ok then it's still deal. I'm not a smoker but the smell from the boxes was amazing, honey, cognac and vanilla , just stunning. He'd always smoked cuban so when I gave them to him we joked about cheap cigars etc etc. and when I said I'd got them from an auction he asked about humidors, storage, age, humidity etc cue more jokes about duff knock off cigars, no better than dried leaves from the local park... Anyway we opened the boxes, all good there, nice and moist, still with the original leaf coverings. I thought no more of it until he phoned me telling me he'd just had one - a good long smoke 2 hours plus - and it was incredible. Turns out I'd purchased 2 boxes of Anejo Shark 77's, which apparently are rather hard to come by. That's scored me some brownie points I can tell you although he's never offered one to me...

Keeping them for himself! Bit mean but well done you for picking them up at auction.
I’d insist on trying one.. :)

@Bebs - I haven't seen any posts on here where you haven't been partaking of Cuban varieties and wondered if you had tried or liked any of the (supposed) new world cigars? I tend to buy from my local (ish) shop who are part of Havana House and often try something new if they have singles or deals (ever the tight @rse!).

I recently tried a selection of Honduran and rather enjoyed an offering from Comacho - you have to get past the gaudy bands but a decent smoke. And a bit cheaper than a comparable Cuban offering (but not much anymore)

Roll on the warmer days so I can get outside more and enjoy a proper smoke.

Similar story ...... A few years back, I was at the Tombola of our local church fundraiser and won a prize by picking a number ending in zero. All prizes were wrapped apart from a battered box of cigars.

I enquired as to why and they said they had to in case a minor picked them. So grabbed them and ended up with 10 tubed Montecristos - they were old but being tubed still being tubed they weren't completely dry.

Pulled 1 from the tube and put it in my humidor and enjoyed the next weekend.

The best pound I have ever spent :)

A friend of mine has just posted me these @Bebs I assume they’re acceptable quality? (I’ve never even heard of the Hoyo?)

He had James J. Fox hand deliver a load so chr*st knows how much he must of spent..

Sounds good, I’m familiar with Partagas but never actually smoked one (well not sober enough to remember anyway)..

They‘re both great cigars and both vitolas are ‘Robustos’
I smoked a Partagas Serie D No 4 on page 8 of this thread just last week. One of my favourites.
The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2 is also a lovely smoke, unfortunately I’ve run out them!
Retail is just over £20 per stick at the moment.
What a nice friend you have! :)

I don’t have anything against non-Cuban cigars per say, and I have smoked quite a few over the years. But I do find many to be one dimensional compared with a Havana. They just don’t have the depth of flavour or intensity that quality Cuban tobacco offers, of course that’s just my own opinion.
One of the better non-Cubans are Padron cigars, I’ve had quite a few that were comparable to a Havana.

Thanks Bebs - will look out a Padron.

edit - just taken a look at Padrons and at the price point they will need to be bloody good to be better than Cuban alternatives (and my favourite Punch Punchs).

After a 6 hour marathon in the garage today sorting through my tools, car stuff, building materials etc, I feel I’ve earned a cigar.
The plasterer is coming next week so I had no choice but to get on with it and completely clear the garage. Hope I don’t bore you with the pics..
