I've found that if the wear is more towards the shoulder and smooth then it tends to be camber. If it's over a wider area, say 1/4 - 1/3 of the tyre and a rougher wear it tends to be toe-out causing the problem. Toe causes the tyre to scrub more, whereas camber is just using one portion of the tyre more than the other bits, hence the difference in the type of wear.
From my albeit limited experience of driving a GTS I'd say it needs a bit more toe-in, and perhaps a tad more camber, than they come from the factory. Sounds like someone who owned your car may have felt the same. Personally if it feels good I'd live with the extra cost, but then I like pointy cars and don't mind the tyre wear. On a daily it's probably not worth it though.
