Enhancing the exhaust sound yet further - 4.2 GT

I have to admit to being a bit envious when reading about how great the exhaust note sounds on an MC Shift but when I bought my 4.2 (and even now!) I was reluctant to fork out the extra £10k when the 4.2 suits me fine otherwise.

I read another post on here but must have misunderstood because I though that the only way to enhance the exhaust note on a 4.2 was to replace the whole exhaust at great expense, which to me is just not worth it - but is there a cheaper way for a few hundred pounds?

Or have I REALLY misunderstood?!

Thanks

Hi Bobby can you just fit rear Larini back boxes not the same car but I have the 4200cc and just having the back boxes sounds pretty good and wasn't really that expensive.

An x-pipe and larini style rear boxs will give you a great sound for about £2k...keep whilst you have the car then sell on ebay for more than 50% of its value.

Thanks.

Does anyone know (roughly!) how much the Larini back box (only) system is, without the x-pipe and everything else, as I can find any prices?

Also, what about exhausts from Super Sprint (is that what they are called?)? Are they not recommended?

Somebody on here had the GTS 4.7 exhaust system fitted to a 4.2 GT and reckoned it sounded the same as a GTS. Have a search to see what you can find.

I don't know what the exhaust system look like for the Granturismo, but I am assuming it consist of a catalytic converter at the front, a mid section silencer, then back box?

I would get rid of the mid box replaced with a straight pipe, retain everything else standard, think you should able to achieve the sound you wanted without being harsh and intrusive??!!
And it shouldn't cost you more than a few hundred pounds...

Do 4.2's have a Sport button?
Yes. All GranTurismos (and GranCabrios) have the SPORT button as standard. But how the engine, transmission, suspension, exhaust, etc. behave as a consequence of it being pressed varies from model to model. The 4.2 doesn't have a Sports Exhaust, so all it does is sharpen up the throttle response, suspension, and gear changes are quicker (c/w Normal or ICE modes).

Is that why the Grancabrio I see every now and then is a little quieter than my MC Shift? I mean he may not have the Sport button pressed so maybe that's it? Just always wondered how they differ. The Grancabrio has an auto box?

Hi Conrad, yep, the standard (base) GranCabrio does not have a Sports Exhaust (despite it having the 4.7 litre V8 engine). And yes, you're correct - it has an automatic transmission, however, unlike the (more powerful) 'Sport' and 'MC' variants of the GranCabrio, the base GC does not have the MC Auto Shift transmission. It's a very different (more subdued) ride compared with the Sport and MC variants.

All the 4.2 GTs don't have valved mufflers and therefore are all quiet regardless if Sport button/mode is activated.

All the 4.7 GT and Grancabrios have the valved exhausts and when sport mode is activated the valves open and the sound goes louder after 3k RPM. (By the way all Grancabrios are 4.7 and are quiet when sport mode isn't active)

The Currrnt 2014 sport model GT exhaust valves open once sport mode is activated without the 3k RPM limit

To make the stabdard 4.7 loud all the time is easy. You just disconnect the vacuum system for the exhaust so the valves are always open.

I used to have the 4.2 and put the 4.7 GTS exhaudt on it- straight swap!.... It sounded amazing, lots of crackles and pops! In fact I feel it sounds better than my current 4.7 with the valves open all the time. I wonder if it's to do with the engines being different.

Sorry for any text errors - this forum isn't that iphone friendly!!

Hello Bobby. Two people you should call - Noor from Torenno Performance (http://www.torenno.com/maserati) and Marios from Autoshield (http://www.autoshieldmaserati.co.uk/Home.html). Both are excellent at helping our cars unleash some noise. Both are also sponsors here and very well regarded. An x-pipe is probably a good start and both Noor and Marios can help you out with that. Mine is from Marios and the sound is terrific. Noor had a 4.2 and the sound was insane - he'd done a lot of work on his and can tell you exactly what.

(As a side note, I must compare mine with a Strad at some point.)

Just to expand on my previous post, T10YYY is correct in that all the GranCabrio variants (which all have a 4.7l engine) have a valve exhaust, however the base GC has the dual twin tail pipes (aka 'Quad pipes'), which do not sound the same as the twin oval tail pipes on the GC Sport variant (nor obviously like the bespoke MC exhaust system on the GranCabrio MC and the MC Stradale). So although the base GC does have a valved exhaust, it is tamer than the Sport variant's exhaust, hence the base GC's exhaust isn't usually referred to as being a 'Sports Exhaust'.

Thanks Adam - that sounds like good advice.

Tilum, I have always been confused when it comes to the different sports exhausts.
Am I right in saying there are the following sports exhausts:

1) 4.7 valved quad chrome exhaust

2) 4.7 valved quad black tip

3) 4.7 valved dual black tip

My current GC has the (1) and I have left the valves open all the time and it's loud. However when I had the 4.2 I bought the (2) and it seemed louder than my current GC with permanent open valves. In fact the main difference is the popping on downshift.

I'm guessing the quad black and dual tip black are the same but does that mean they both differ to the chrome?

I presume the MC is a complete different setup.

Sorry to complicate matters further

Hi Bobby,
I got my Larini's 2nd hand from Noor. You get it above 3k and they sing, above 5k and they rip. If you use manual and down shift they give a bit of over run without being ott, however now I want a bit more for the Silverstone and the 100 trip so I'm getting an x-pipe as well, just got to get my act together been sidetracked lately. I'm guessing you're not that far from me so we can always hook up and you can hear them.

I have to admit to being a bit envious when reading about how great the exhaust note sounds on an MC Shift but when I bought my 4.2 (and even now!) I was reluctant to fork out the extra £10k when the 4.2 suits me fine otherwise.

Bobby

Did you get any further with this? I'm thinking about tweaking the system on my 2008 4.2 and wondered if just changing the X-pipe had made a difference? I don't want anything too loud - just a bit more meat.

Thanks.
