For a hybrid design you start with an ICE car whose manufacture has a given carbon footprint, then add the EV components which inevitably add to that footprint. Conversely, when in EV driving mode it's not presumably creating as much pollution as when the ICE engine is running. Cost-wise, there's usually a premium for hybrid over ICE (notwithstanding purchase incentives which skew the figures).

I wonder if anyone has done the sums to show which, in the life of the a car, is really cheapest to own and which is actually best for the planet (including end of life disposal) - hybrid or ICE?

As much as I appreciate the argument about EV (home) charging costs I can't help but wonder if hybrid manufacture is more about marketing than altruism, and given recent concerns about massive pollution from the mining of rare metals used in EV battery production is it sustainable in the long term?

Wonder what the impact will be for further EV depreciation now the ban on petrol/diesel has been moved.

I suspect most PCPs etc were predicted on the used car buyer moving rapidly onto battery cars, which 'may' slow down now.

I love the fact that pre pandemic depreciation has enabled me to buy a nearly new T8 XC90 at roughly 1/2 it's retail cost, and that the madness of the present market means I have only lost £9k over 40k miles and 3 years.

I am now in a quandary; do I trade up to a newer one or wait for the EX90 to drop onto the used market in c2 years (not due out for another 9 months).

There is no other EV or hybrid that will fit 2 Golden Retrivers and all our holiday stuff (except the RR which is c50% more)

Without any detailed calculations, it seems plausible that hybrids would cost more given that you have the complexity of ICE and the electric part and on top of that all the gear that makes it all work together. So both in construction and maintenance, that would IMHO add cost.
On top of that, once the batteries are emptied, you chug them around turning the car into a heavy ICE car for that time. The situation is obviously different in cases where your main drives are (largely or completely) covered by the battery as could be the case with more recent hybrids, so it's very dependant on the use case.
Full electric cars otoh are in fact not so complex...

Next to the use case, there is also the part where hybrids are an easy first move towards electric cars for people who aren't ready for the big change, who are worried about range etc, or as mentioned when the use case works out.
Fwiw, we do loads of long distance and with dome changes in habits, really like the full electric 'experience'.

Very curious to see proper calculations on the comparison...

Evil Vehicle kidnaps driver, shock horror!

Lessons to be learnt
You're all men act like one, don't buy and drive an electric vehicle
Don't buy chinese...except the food.
Forget the above, just go through red lights at speed and say your car was possessed by a software devil....

That will be Telematics for you I'm sure ;)
I feel really safe in my old Jaguar now especially as I've had it in my workshop and gone right through it.
Done 242,000 kilometres and the brakes are perfect.
The radio cassette player puts out some nice tunes too.

'They' have installed telematics on all airside vehicles at work. Apparently, they've made it go live today too. To drive a car you have to wave a pass at the right point otherwise it won't start.
Fail number one, I'm an engineer, if there's a way around it, I'll find it.
Fail number Two. They've installed it incorrectly.

Start vehicle, Telematics beeps for 15 secs, drive away. No pass, no tracking, nothing.
I'll let you know if 'the power crazed yellow and red safety jacket team' catch up with me.

Just sold a half height shelf unit and the lady I sold it to rocked up in a Tesla. She wanted me to get it in the back seat. I asked what not the boot, she said it's not big enough. I pulled the clip and the seats folded...OMG she says...

I slid it in her back end no trouble...she gasped with delight. She thought it wouldn't fit because it was too big, but my fingers did the business...

What? You all have dirty minds...
