Exhaust sound - MC Shift vs 4.7 Auto

I know that this has been covered elsewhere but I can't find the thread so.....

I am going to upgrade from my 4.2 Gran Tursimo to a 4.7S or MC Shift.

What I need to know is: does the exhaust note/sound on the 4.7S Auto in any mode, sports or otherwise (is it only over 3,000 revs?) sound like the gorgeous cracking and popping of an MC Shift?

If not is there a way that I COULD achieve the same or similar noise with a 4.7S Auto?

Thanks

Hi,
If all you want is the noise - then Larini all the way (and you can get one with flaps too if required). Turns a 4.2 into the most amazing popping and cracking sounding car on the roads :)

The sound is the same as an MC Shift when over 3000rpm. It could be made permanent by getting rid of the valves I'd think but then you'd be stuck with the noise which isn't good when trying to creep down the street or for drone at motorway speeds.

FD do a cheap kit to open/close the valves as you see fit - independent of Sport mode and revs.

MC-Shift all day for me for the more aggressive looks and manual input
on gear changes- sounds much better too at low revs. test drive both and see what you prefer and what is best suited to your needs as well

Well it would sound better at low revs given the valves are closed on the auto below 3000 revs (apart from at start up).

Yep, exactly. I do like the idea of a kit to open/close manually. Sometimes you might want the sound but not sport mode on (in the wet in particular!)

The MC shift when in sports mode really does sound fantastic, all the time, at any speed or revs. I imagine that having the valves open all the time on a 4.7 auto would get pretty tiresome, especially on long drives.
However to me the biggest advantage of the MC shift is the brutality of the gear changes when over 80% throttle and 5000 rmp. Such aggressive and rapid gear changes!

I wish I'd never bought my MC shift.
Since selling it I am tormented 24 hours a day with the fact that I don't have it around.....the noise, the way it made me feel.....doooooooohhhhhh.
Once bitten, forever smitten.
Cheers, gutted Wattie

That sounds like the perfect scenario whether it be the auto or the MCS, something to look into some more I think

FD? :-/

(I have driven all 3 models and LOVED the noise of the MC Shift and the looks but not the jerky, head nodding, manual gear change or the thought of a clutch that wears out!

So if I can find a 4.7 S Auto with the right options to make it look like an MC Shift then all that I am missing is the noise! Hence my question. :)

So this kit from FD, whoever they are, MAY be the solution!

If your getting any jerkiness or head nodding your not changing correctly. It does take a while to get used to it but they are as smooth as an auto if done correctly. Yes the clutch wear is always in your mind especially in traffic but other than that they are great cars.
I've found myself dropping the window in my wifes diesel car when going through tunnels only to be told "your not in the Masser darling". It becomes 2nd nature. Go for the MC

Yes very probably. I only test drove one for a short period but even so to have to 'learn' how to change gear properly in a car like this seems a bit weird - I am no driving God after all (much as I like to think that I am!)

This will make you smile, but the only time I have experienced a similar head nodding gear change (which drove me mental at the time), it it was alarmingly similar, was in a Fiat 500 loan car, which I was really looking forward to driving. I even checked out the type of gearbox fitted to the car afterwards: manual automated :-(

Have to say whilst digressing a bit before I drove my GTS I was worried about the box being jerky. I've driven my mates 355 F1 lots of times and it's quite frankly horrendous gear change but it's an early SMG type box.

But for me the GTS box is light years ahead of it and I'd go as far as saying it's not a million miles away from a DCT set up. Never had a head jerk moment yet. You get the odd in smooth change in town driving but very few. As mentioned you soon get use to it and figure out the style.

Defo don't rule a 4.7 GTS out based on the box. You soon click with it

The GTS with the sports pack has the exhaust valves that open all the time when in sports mode. So it's sound is like the MC shift but obviously you don't have the rapid gear changes, but the positive is no clutch to replace.

Ah! Now THIS sounds like what I am after. The convenience and practicality of an Auto with the (optional) noise of the MCShift, but with out the clutch wear.

So a GTS 4.7 Auto with Sports Pack, sounds like what I am after....
