Exhaust sound - MC Shift vs 4.7 Auto

Excuse the question but what is a 'Sport Pack' and how can I tell if my Sport I'm collecting tomorrow has it?

If you are buying a 4.7 auto then four round pipes is no and two ovals is yes. Basically is a body kit and functions in sport mode that give faster gear changes and exhaust valves open over a wider range. Does not change the suspension.

Enjoy your car. What's the colour etc?

You should ask the dealer you are buying from to supply you with the spec sheet for your car. This will tell you the optional extras that your car came with.

Mine for instance has the sports handling pack. Don't know if that is different from the "sports pack". But supposedly it means it has the stradale suspension setup, 10mm lower ride height, grooved and drilled brake discs.

If I look at my suspension they are red and have the words MC on them. Is that different from the normal Granturismo?

Sport pack is just available for the 4.7 auto.

The Stradale suspension and brakes make your car very interesting. I think we spoke before on this as I thought it was just a retro-fit from the MC catalogue but you reckoned it was factory fit, I think?!

PS All Granturismo discs are drilled but anything produced after Autumn 12 with a 4.7 engine is grooved also.

I have it on my options list print out from the dealer.

What does everyone else's suspension look like?

I've read a lot of stuff on the internet about it and not all of it tallies. On one piece it even talked about a slightly different weight distribution??? Don't believe that though.

There will be difference in weight distribution between Auto and MC as the auto box is attached to the rear of the engine and the MC is a transaxle unit.

Thats on of the reasons why the full auto QP V took so long to develop

Ok yes. Now I have read that in many places. You are right the MC shift box is placed in a better position than the Auto for better weight distribution. However this is not part of the sports handling package. It is purely a result of having an MC shift box.

On the GranTurismo Sport, the MC Auto Shift automatic transmission is mounted directly on the engine: this layout, and the fact that the engine is moved back behind the front axle, provides extremely well balanced weight distribution with 49% at the front and 51% at the rear. This generates predictable handling, making the car more relaxing to drive, and maximises traction during acceleration.

“Handling Package†replaces the standard electronically controlled suspension with suspension with a single rigid setup lowered by 10 mm, red springs and shock absorbers and a more rugged rollbar. The mapping of the electronic MSP system is also more appropriate for high-performance handling.

According to Maserati.

Just reading through this and my memory was jogged about a former member some years back changing his GTS suspension setup fo Stradale kit. He followed this with fitting Stradale wheels as well before selling the car relatively soon afterwards. A quick trawl found the post:

I wonder where that car is now. He spent a small fortune on these parts and a comprehensive audio upgrade. A check on RX58ACZ brings nothing up. Presumably on a cherished reg now.

Yep I remember him too. From memory he was a serial car changer so there is a cracking GTS out there somewhere.

I got one installed on my GTS Auto. This gives you 3 modes actually.

1. LOUD - with the kit switched on
2. Off - kit switched off
3. Default Sports mode - with kit switched off but Sports mode on.

Personally, I would prefer a smoother gear change, and the idea of being able to leave it in Auto without worrying about clutch replacement... I wanted to get the MC shift for the noise, but did not want the disadvantages associated with MC, so th FD kit gives the best of both world...

How much was this kit? and is it a DIY fit?

I can't find it on the FD website.

I have one on its way over at the moment. Came in at equivalent of around £135 inc delivery plus the duty when customs see it.

Not shown on site just email them.

Some have diy fitted but I will be paying an operative to fit!

Thanks for the reply.

It would be good to hear proper video (driving from behind) of a GTS auto with this mod, to compare with the MC for sound.
Now I know I want a 4.7 I thought I'd be happy with either, but I can't stop watching this video (MC) and it is intoxicating.

I need to know if this sound can achieved on the auto or not.

I find it strange that you would choose which gearbox to have on the basis of the exhaust noise when the gearboxes are so different and an exhaust is so easy to 'fix' with after market options if you feel the need....is it not a case of the decision tail wagging the dog?

Don't get me wrong, obviously I wouldn't base my decision solely on the noise. I will drive both and see what suits me better.

I see advantages of both, I love the idea of the auto, not worrying about the clutch wear and getting nice smooth gear changes all the time and when maneuvering. But there are things I love about the looks and sound of the MC i.e. the dark headlights, the rear spoiler/side skirts, the Neptune is it?wheels ...AND the sound - in particular the blip on down change and having the valves open at low revs with sport on.

Now due to your very helpful posts on here I now know that I can get an auto with sport pack which will cover most of those points I mention above. I have been looking into the cost of retro-fitting some of these visual options to a GTS if I couldn't find one with the sport pack and it gets very pricey. That's why I was asking about the price of the FD box for the valves and whether "the easy to 'fix' exhaust with after market options" actually can sound the same as the MC. :)

It's not the be all and end all, but if I'm spending this kind of money on a car, I don't want to think afterwards "I wish I'd got the MC or Auto in the first place"etc..

The different combinations are a bit of a minefield to a newbie like me, so I'm just trying to get my head around them. I'm beginning to think with this marque, you just have to wait for the right combination to come up, or you could spend a fortune trying to achieve what you want.

Yep always best to buy right rather than have to add expensive retro-fit options. Have you driven any yet?

My GT Sport MC Auto burbles on the downshifts, but the RPM must be a certain level I notice to get the burble etc noise. I even got a printout. The GT Sport MC Auto is the same box and software as what's in the MC Strad Gran Cabrio, I had them provide me with a print out to confirm software matched.

Only an early 4.2 so far. Really enjoyed it, and even that sounded impressive, but think I'll need the 4.7 to keep me interested long term.

Strongly advise organising back to back drives as only this will give you the real answer. I did this and ended up completely changing my plans formed form Reading the Internet and YouTube videos.

GT Sport MC Auto, that's a later model right?
