surely they cant do this, if they are useing an electronic instrument it has to be acurate other wise they are in breach of the weights and measures act.

The so called electronic instrument Rob is the cars very own F1 sensor , the readings of the sensor are accessed using the sd2/3 diagnostic , this is the good part , the accuracy of the sensor is determined by the parameters on initiall set up , if the original set has a large built in safety limit which is my guess then it will prematurely show wear as a greater amount

I think there must be hundreds of owners in the UK and many more in the US that have been advised at service time that their clutch is at 60/70 % worn , and subsequently had it renewed ho hum , you hear it all the time on Maseratilife it cracks me up

Ahhh............just having a victor moment Loz...............still having it .........case for a class action in the states, if maser have set a F.O.S. on their on board kit then the reading may indicate 60% when in actual fact its only 50%, am I understanding this correctly ?
If some one could prove this and challenge maserati, and I guess you would have to be pretty p1ssed off to bother, it could be very expensive for them.

The actual 'wear' reading itself is only an estimate and varies a great deal Rob,
I have had 3 reading taken on mine since purchasing the QP about a year and a half ago...
The first was at HR Owen, who did a service when I bought the car - this was 44%
The second was about 6 months later at Roberts Aerospace when I had the DBW fitted - this was 43%
The third was at Grimaldi Engineering on its last major service last November - this one was.........17%
At this wear rate mine will last to infinity...heheheheh

Excactly Rob , but its my guess that the safety limit is far greater than 10% more like 25% , my own clutch was read at 31K miles and showed 100% wear according to DL Swindon, no synptoms showing at that time , even had a test drive with the tech driving and he had to admit the car drove fine as it should , some 12K miles later slight slippage started but to a minor extent , 14K miles later slippage still minimal but the occasional dropping out of gear has started which is one of the true tell tale signs that soon it needs to be replaced

So 14K miles of a total of 45Kmiles represents one third yes one third surprising eh

So, all in all its a pretty useless piece of kit and the results are worthless. so why bother having it at all.

It's just one of a miriad of parameters that can be read by the diagnostic equipment...apparently there are 27 ECUs on board!

Knowing what we know now Rob i would tend to agree, none the less its always been a good bargaining tool for new purchasers of used massers , negotiating a new clutch at the start of their ownership sort of brings some feeling of assurrity at least for the first few years anyway,

No one wants to break down , but to feel you have used a higher preportion of your clutch rather than basically throwing 30% of it away is kind of heartening in some sort of sad way , especially to us tight wads

My clutch collapsed at 45% after I had the car about 4 months.

The previous owner drove the car round in AUTO all the time, hum.
