So, I plugged in an iPod last night and it worked! You have to plug in both cables - Aux and USB - which seems a bit weird, but it worked. That said, thus far I've only managed to get it to show there are 500+ (or whatever) songs on and you have to scroll through them to find whatever you want. Its not divided up by albums, but seems to suggest it might be accepting of the idea of playlists. A step forward...
...the downside is I loathe using iTunes with a passion, given that its an Apple product and therefore primarily for 'brand-bitches', in my opinion
. A hideous piece of software with a seeming inability to reliably communicate with either of the iPods in our house.
What this has re-emphasised to me also is the awful sound quality from the Maserati stereo - Bose or not. Perhaps they simply think "nah, lets not bother - people will only and should only listen to the engine", which is fine as far as it goes, but just once in a while you might want something else.
