Insurance Shocker

Aliquot, mods can make a huge difference, I recall direct line trying to charge an additional £150 for the Lotus once I'd told them that I'd put Viper stripes on it! Same story with uprated brakes, suspension and harnesses - all make the car safer, all add to the premium.
Admiral were a bit more open minded and didn't charge for any of the mods.

true, did i have fun with Direct Line, trying to explain the idea of a tiptronic upgrade on my XKR. I was being honest what it had, they just could not get to grips with it as it did not fit in one of their boxes.

I was looking at the new shape XKR convertible, more reliable than a DB9 and a lot cheaper to service. They seem to be coming down in price to below £30k which is a lot of car for the money.

there are indeed, had one as a courtesy car for a few days, handle well too. :)

This thread just got me thinking id better check what my insurance would be on a Spyder or GS.

:) Asda just quoted me £7500 full comp!!!
Direct in - £5200

At this point im getting worried...but then Admiral qouted £1800 with business use and a 300 excess so panic over.

Im 29 no NCB as have it on my other car and ive 3 points on my DL

Looking for some ideas of what you guys pay and where you live and whether or not you have points on license. Have I been shafted???? Someone told me that premiums had gone up massively recently

Urby, the figure I was told was 40% increase in something like three months! IIRC it was mid-year lat year. When I was looking for a GS, quotes were c£7-800, best I could get when bought was over £1100. Ended up doing a multi-car with MWA - well worht speaking to them.

As above, speak to Martin Ward Associates. I dealt with Denrick and he gave me a very competive quote, tailored to me. This year, I've gone for unlimited miles (well, 12k) but he could have done loads better if I wasprepared to limit to 5k miles.

Contact details for Denrick are:

Peter your problem is compounded by your post code as I'msure you are aware, but they work it on a % increase so if there has been an insurance loss increase in your post code, general premium increase across the board of say 5% along with 3 points it all adds up.

I have to say though with all my bike and car insurance experience 3 points has never made more than 2 or 3 % increase on renewal? I had a 10 day ban for sp 50 speeding, (92 in 70) on the motorway never made a difference mate.

My misses called the insurance when she got three points as she thought they'd like to know, they didn't care less & her premium didn't go up at all when she renewed. I believe the cold weather has a lot to do with the current hikes in insurance, so many claims have been made in the last 12 months they are trying to recoup there losses (of profit). I changed insurers last year, I got 3 different insurances for my 3 cars via comparison websites, I found admiral multicar a lot more expensive than the 3 seperate insurers I ended up with. I increased the excess on all my cars, put a limited 6k milage on the Maz and the premium went down considerably.

It pays to spend time shopping around.

Bizarrely Nick...accident rates etc feel dramatically during the cold spells cos no one was out driving....maybe other cold related claims?

In NI the rate of death on the road went from 110 last year to 55 this year.......explain the rise over here??!!

Try Adrian FLux as well Dicky if you get no joy. I know nothing of them, but apparently they specialise in modified cars.

Got mine through Aviva - they are not on compare sites, but at £540 with protected NCB seemed a good deal on a 3200 - £800 excess though, mind you 4 days later I wrote it off - 13K payout within a week or so (3K more than I paid for the car)
Aviva then quoted over £600 for a E36 BMW Convertible - the cheapest multi policy from Admiral came in at over £1500 for both cars

As I completed the deal with Aviva I commented on how cheap it was - "thats because you live in a good area, with clean driving record and no accidents" said the salesman - I am dreading next year as not only have a write off against me, I picked up 3 points and so did the wife!

So I am afraid the wife wont be on the insurance for the Mas next year - gotta keep costs down you know

The will have fun with you next year, as i found out this year after rolling my jag last year. Does pay to shop around though, my current company went from 550 to 2,500, so i went and bought a masser, and ended up at £900, with 9 points so not all bad.

Could swear, if you have any female relative on your insurance...always reduces the premium?!

Thats probably true however I lost count of the number of crashes I came across during the snow. I don't its the fatalities thats the problem its the number of minor accidents, whip lash claims that add up to huge amounts of money. I'm not sure but I think its probably cheaper to pay for a death than for a lifetime of care for a disabled person?

I'd let her drive it, although there hasn't been an occasion that's required her to drive it as yet.

I wouldn't let her park it though....

I was looking at the new shape XKR convertible, more reliable than a DB9 and a lot cheaper to service.

Cheper to service - probably, but not by much (Aston is £600), more reliable - not a chance! DB9 is the most reliable supercar(!) out there, just a few electrical gremlins in early cars. I was able to view my entire histrory of the car (one owner, one service centre), a window regulator was replaced 3 years ago. That is it, since 2006. I think that is pretty impressive.

I had a 4.2 XKR ragtop (very late car of last shape) and it was made of cheese. Constant suspension components, wheels bearings, brakes and electrical issues. I know the new XKR is vastly more modern, and like comparing the DB7 to the DB9, but it makes me think twice as I would love a Jag coupe for a winter car... We both pine for the XKR, it was a good car nontheless!

Oh, and insurance. I'm with ClassicLine and had the Maser with them, was about £500 for 5000miles. I went from zero to 6 points in a year as well and my premiums were never affected, nor did mods add to the cost. Broker I spoke to said neither my points nor my mods cost him any money, why should he care. Very sensible attitude I thought. DB9 is costing £150 more than the DB7, not bad considering it's worth double!

Give them a ring, I have all the cars insured with them. They're very helpful!
