Interesting options for a station car?

I can't believe the first mark 1's MX5's on a G plate imported into the UK back in '89 are 28 years old this year!
My Dad ordered one for a quick buck from the local Mazda dealer, and we had it for a month before he sold it on for a small profit due to demand at the time.

Quite possibly, yes! It's more the left-field suggestion than the practical one.

I'm assuming actually making it to the station would be a requirement to staying in employment though

I'm sure that cheeky smile with a mouthed "maserati" when you're late 3 days out of 5 would wear thin with the boss fairly quickly

If you are looking at an mx5 why not look at an S2000 as well?

I prefer the look of them.

you'll do well to find a good S2000 for 5k

Agreed - from what I've seen a decent S2000 seems to start at about £6k

Love the left-field suggestion from Ewan of a bi-turbo, but suspect my team would get bored very quickly of me being late for work...

Keep the suggestions coming though!

Most of the original UK MX-5's have rotted away. The key is to get a late import from 92 onwards so that it has lived in Japan for most of it's life. Ours is like news underneath and has only covered 46k miles.

I know these guys, very professional outfit run by Nathan.

Auto kills it though from a resale point.

The Auto also means it's a non starter for me in terms of a serious option, but achingly pretty...

Here's mine (ours as my Dad when he saw it had to be part owner!).

There's this tidy one for sale on FB at the moment at around £5k. A solid investment.

"It is a 1992 (J) standard car in red, which has only covered 62k miles and was imported in 2007. The car bodily, internally, mechanically and the underside can all be accurately described as being in excellent condition. The original alloy wheels have been fully refurbished and are complete with a set of Pirelli tyres with good tread all round.
My Dad has imported and sold a lot of these over the last 18 years, and we have owned quite a few as personal cars and this one can only be described as immaculate.
It has just been fully detailed and members who have seen it will vouch for the condition. I have a full range of images available on request. The car is located in Peterlee, County Durham. If you have any questions or would like to view, just send me a message. Part-exchange welcome. £5495. Thanks."

They both look stunning Phil...

One of my concerns with buying a classic MX5 is that due to only having a 2 car garage it will need to live outside, and may well be occasionally left at the station overnight, etc.. As such, I can see how I'd feel uncomfortable leaving something in such great condition and which really ought to be garaged out in the rain, snow, etc...

This is also why I was thinking if I got one I would want one with a hard top, and why I might decide to go with a cheaper Mk2 one. Or a Mk5 Golf GTI... so many choices!

A decent Mk1 MX5 can be had for around £3000, mine was left outdoors in all weathers. It was bought as a fun car to commute 60 miles each way. It was left at the airport for 2-3 weeks at a time, and always started. Had it 2 1/2 years and sold for what we paid. :) Bonus if the sun was out when I got home, roof down, and a "detour" through the hills was in order.

My next door neighbours have an auto they've had for 10+ years , nothing like the manuals, its hard to imagine how just a gearbox can ruin a car

In 92-93 I was offered one as a hire car in florida , jumped at it , went outside looked at lynne and the 3 suitcases , hmm

Managed to stuff one in the boot , one between her legs, the last one went on the folded roof with her holding the handle all the way to the hotel , had to go back in a taxi on the way home as we'd bought stuff , that was a lazy auto as well , ok for 6 Lane highways but it sucked most of the power

You can get great looking Mk2s and Mk3s, but I'm struggling to find a clean looking Mk1 for anything under £3500.

You will mate, to get a good one you need more like £4-5k , there are some real dogs about.
