Haha yeah i remember that so well , typically on a sunday morning , going armed with most tools hidden in the great coat and asking for a radiator cap lol , Africa believe it or not is still like that ,
Most impressive one I saw was a mate walk out with a Rover P6 cylinder head down the sleeve of a baggy anorak which he was wearing.

Remember the Slick 50 back in the day and all the celebrity advertising like Roger Clarke.
So say put a Teflon lining on everything a bit like on a frying pan ;)
I'm sure they emptied the oil out and drove it on a track to prove how good it was.

Another one in the 80's was when Mobil 1 first came out and this one was really interesting.
They took a brand new BMW E30 325i ran it continually from 0 to 1 million miles on track only stopping to re fuel and service as per schedule.
They then stripped the engine and it was totally in spec of a new engine.

My starter was a 68 Ford Thunderbird coupe with the modestly named “429 Thunderjet” V-8, coupled to a very tall set of gears at a ratio of 2.80. On Arizona back roads it could wrap the 120mph speedometer all the way around to about 25. Needless to say, such antics lended themselves well to generating opportunities to excel at mechanical work. Tinkering with heads and intakes eventually led to a blown engine in the middle of the desert, limping in to remote Holbrook to buy a 460 to drop in.
