True enough. But we've been here before. Multiple times. One of my favorites was when we built a bunch of corvettes (ships) for the Israelis to thank them for staying out of the Gulf War, because if they had joined in then Turkey was gonna pile on...and if Turkey had piled on, then...well, you get the picture.

It may be smart, or it may be dumb, but Biden unequivocally (though unilaterally) expanding NATO to include Taiwan (and yes, I know what I'm saying but if you think that China attacking Taiwan, and the US getting involved, doesn't drag the UK and others in, then...) may have been helpful in wedging a little daylight between Vladdy and Xi on the Ukraine issue. Especially since Russia will be no help to the Chinese if the poo ever hits the fan. As others have said, Russia is the second greatest military in Ukraine.
I think the reverse is true, the Chinese are looking at the steadfast resolve of the West to combat Russia's aggression and will think twice about invading Taiwan. If the West sticks together, especially through winter, operation sealion (or whatever it is in mandarin!) will be held off.

The goal is first to weaken the opponent, China has all the time ahead of them. Another objective is the development of Central Asia: I would not be surprised if the project of a modern canal between the Caspian Sea and the Sea of Azov appears again.

That's precisely what I was trying to say. Just not as well!

What an impressive piece of equipment , without air superiority how do you defend against this , by the time the first round lands it's gone

Counter battery radar would give you the last known position and drones / satellites would grid search and/ or route search.
A Reaper type drone with Hellfire equivalent missiles would take them out. Artillery doesn't deploy alone. You'd have a battery of guns and at least a platoon of troops to provide security. In reality, it's not a hard target to neutralise, provided you have the resources on hand. Trouble is, the Russians don't appear to have the resources and the Ukrainians are being smart in how they use deception and manoeuvre.
The Ukrainians were taught to fight like the Soviets. The military doctrines they're using now, to literally run rings around the Russians are straight out of NATO doctrine. Obviously the Ukrainians have had US and UK advisors embedded with their command elements for several months. NATO has been very smart about this. They've retrained the Ukrainians in small unit tactics and at the same time retrained their senior officers ( Majors and above) in NATO doctrine for the counter offensive and in insurgency warfare between February and now. All the emphasis on retraining allows the Ukrainians to get the most bang out of their new kit.
The key difference between success and failure is the very high levels of motivation of the Ukrainians.
NATO attempted similar strategies in Afghanistan where they got limited cooperation from the locals and we saw how that ended at Bagram.

...plus that whole bit about arming and training the Mujahideen to fight the Russkis back in Funkytown.

When I first went into the service, there was still a USSR and a Cold War...the lesson that we should have learned from WWII is, "you break it, you bought it." In one man's opinion, anyway.

Indeed, throughout Goa you will see such symbols on house walls etc.
So that's where they all went! Goa? Really? Are there little Bavarian-like villages in Goa, off the beaten track?
The fun facts that you learn on this forum!

Considering the calibre of 'private soldiers' / mercenaries that the Russians are using. I think it more likely that the sign is some knuckle dragger's attempt at a swastika, as opposed to seeking to reassure the populace that this armoured vehicle and it's crew are only there to spread peace and love.

IMHO, have to say my sceptical brain has kicked in looking at this tweet. My German is pretty poor but three things don’t seem quite ‘right’ about this:
  1. The news report appears to be about captured Russian vehicles and munitions, with the first vehicle with a great big ‘Z’ on it
  2. Looking at the other tweets of the poster ‘LogKa’, it’s clear that they are a pro-Russian individual or propagandist
  3. I tried to Google other, corroborating sources of this claim and just got InfoWars and Russia Today
I am not naive enough to believe that there aren’t elements within Ukraine that have undesirable roots and ideologies, but IMHO this tweet doesn’t seem compelling at any level to me.
