Ukraine was reported today to have inflicted a crippling blow on Russian forces with a lightning push through enemy-occupied territory in the northeast that has liberated strategic towns and villages, in what could prove a turning point in the war. They’ve retaken almost 1,000 square miles of territory!

Military analysts said Russia appeared to have been caught by surprise, describing the collapse of its front line in the northeast as the most significant shift in Ukraine’s favour since the end of March, when Moscow’s forces retreated in disarray from the entire region around Kiev.

May Ukraine be able to hold their gains and maintain this momentum.

I was reading the reports from the Institute of war, and other sites, and it appears that the Ukrainians have out-chessed the Russians!

By opening the counter-offensive on the south, Russia has diverted troops from the East to the South as they see that as quite crucial. If the Ukrainians push to the Dnipro River and re-capture Kherson they can also take the Dnipro to Crimea Canal which supplies the Crimean Penisula with water.

By pulling the resources from the East, Russia has exposed itself. The Ukrainians have pushed through and have apparently reached Kup'yansk. This has a major rail junction (think Crewe!) from Russia to the territories that they hold in the East. Further to this, the Russians have pulled back from Balakliya and Izyum as those forces would be very exposed by Ukrainian flanks.

Russia has increased its training capacity but these troops won't be ready till January so its pertinent that Ukraine gains as much land, resources and critical strategic points before the Russians can mount a credible reposte. However they seem to lack equipment too, hence them asking North Korea for their knock-off copies of Russian Munitions.

I’ve been watching all sorts of news/you tube Chanel’s/ telegrams etc. it’s been hard to keep up with the speed of the advance.
I think they will draw breath in the north for a while and really start the grind in the Kherson region where there is a “better” class, more motivated Russian element. However, I think if Ukraine can keep the attrition rate up they will also make considerable gains in Kherson too. Looking at the geography a couple of well placed punches puts that whole region into a world of hurt for the Russians. We in the west just need to keep up with the supplies of battle winning munitions.

Munitions is right. Russia buying back Soviet-era arms from North Korea is absolutely a thing, as I understand it from some of my friends. When I was in (1990s), we used to joke that our hardware was 40 years behind civilian technology...but the Soviets/Russians were 40 years behind THAT...

I would expect the Russians to throw whatever it takes to hold onto supply routes into Crimea.
No news there. No surprises also, in what munitions they're prepared to use. Including 'special weapons'.
CBR, but hopefully not nuclear.
I imagine that Putin is apoplectic at the intelligence breakdown and this may mean the head of the FSB
or GRU (Russian military intelligence), getting a flying lesson out of his office window.
I suspect, but am no strategist, that soon the Ukrainians will have to choose whether to dig in for the winter
and go static, allowing them to re-arm, retrain and replace front line troops. Their supply lines are becoming
extended which is problematic, because infrastructure like rail lines and bridges have been destroyed.
Given the flat terrain, you'd expect the Russians to counter attack with armour. But because they don't control the airspace, that's a non-starter.
Retraining new troops won't help them, as these troops will not be battle tested and will likely
have been conscripted against their will. Fed a load of BS about Ukraine attacking Russia, which is now
unravelling. Thanks to cell phones. Their morale will plummet quickly, when they start going home in boxes.

Everyone around Putin is weighing up, whether they're better off with him or with someone else.
Including the heads of the Army (because this is really the Army's war) and FSB.
How this develops over the next several months is going to be fascinating and will lead to all the leading militaries rethinking their strategies and how they train for war.

You notice that they've ensured that the communications tower behind them is in the centre of the picture.
So that everyone who knows the area, can't mistake where they are now.
Their kit, mostly looks pretty squared away too. Always a good sign.

After this weekend’s losses, Putin’s inevitable firing of another military commander is a salutary reminder that whilst Putin forces his soldiers to fight for him, Ukrainian soldiers are fighting for their freedom.

...at some point, Vladdy's gonna run outta people to blame.

Interesting analysis video about Putin’s potential psychology on Ukraine. If this is correct then it means a most dramatic, not pragmatic end game.

Stalin didn't......

They just kept on coming until they overwhelmed the Germans with numbers and a bit of luck from the harsh winter.
True, for then. Tough to draw parallels. The Politburo tired of the Premier's ****, sooner or later...and oligarchs being tossed off yachts and hospitals may hurry the reappraisal of Putin's "leadership" ...

Since Her Majesty died several days ago, the Russian Government has issued a steady stream of
letters/ Facebook posts/what have you; expressing condolences / sympathy etc etc to the Royal Family
and the British people.
Now, that they realise that no invitation for Putin nor any other Russian official to attend, will be issued.
We are suddenly an immoral and corrupt country / government / etc etc
This from the regime who used a weapon of mass destruction (nerve agent) in Salisbury, four years ago
and who have refused to extradite those identified as carrying out the attack, despite their being named.
If we are immoral. What does that make the Russian regime that is filled with criminals and klepomaniacs?
Putin and his regime of psychotic criminals, have more faces than an onion has skins.
