MRS H WANTS A G WAGON

The title says it all really. She loves big cars / SUVs and has always been a Mercedes fan. And she wants a G Wagon.

I know the following about G Wagons:

  1. They look like they were designed by a 2 year old with a crayon
  2. The fuel efficiency of the diesels is so bad you may as well have the full fat V8
  3. If you don't get the full fat V8 they are dangerously slow
  4. They are good off road (and as such, sh!te on the road)
But they seem reliable and hold their value pretty well so who am I to argue?

Anyone know anything about them? Or anything I should be wary of?

Budget up to £50k but as this will be another toy, I'd rather spend half that.
Does she really?

Does she speak Russian and like anything that looks like gold / diamond?
If not, not all is lost :)
She knows some actually! When I was catching up I got flash card and stickers on thing with the Russian for it on! Fridge = Kholodilnik......

I have to agree re styling, very retro boxy looking, interiors used to be very basic with cloth/tartan look. Mine ran around in an ML55 for a few years. The G wagon is a bit of a cult thing.
Personally I love the G wagon, but massively over priced for what your get. ( so is the new Discovery by the way). But very capable offroad.

Yes, honestly this is not a 'friend of mine' scenario!

To me, they are ugly and over priced but we agreed the next car would be her choice.

She also likes (and wants) the Lambo SUV ... as does my daughter.

They do a good job on making that old design look better. But it shows it age everywhere. The ride isnt great on the road and you need a serious engine to get a move on.

But i guess it still a better choice compared to another soccer mom cayenne, touareg or q5.

Something different as usual, a mate of mine in Aus always says if you want to go out into the out back buy a Range Rover, if you want to come back buy a Mitsubishi!

I love the g wagen but i could never ship so much cash on something that old skool. And the Lambo 4x4 is appalling and also too much money.

Perhaps introduce her to the Levante Trofeo which must have dropped a few pounds since the bat eating began.

New Land Rover is horrid as well.
A friend of mine (a wine merchant) is collecting his new Defender today and will hopefully pop round in it (with some wine) next week. I’m yet to see one in the flesh.
