A friend of mine (a wine merchant) is collecting his new Defender today and will hopefully pop round in it (with some wine) next week. I’m yet to see one in the flesh.

not seen one in the flesh either yet but do look rather nice from photos iv'e seen, bit of a shame that theyv's overpriced them, would be good to know what he think's of it, might consider a second hand one eventually as long as no reliability issue's, not sure if apostrophes in right place gets a bit confusing;)

When I look back at Range Rovers and Lotus cars my dad bought in the 80's, and look at the value of money today they where bought for, equivalent today comparable models are between 50 to 100% more expensive.
I think all new cars are overpriced, certainly the list prices, and they are overinflated simply so owners (sorry, renters) buy them on PCP.

agreed, why buy new when they drop like a lead balloon in the first year or 2, the only car I have ever bought new is my 2013 M3, only because the dealer had an interest free deal going on, hardly ever use it and has done a humongous 2700 miles to date, might become a collectors car when im pushing up daisies ;)

I would suggest she drives a G Wagen before you go much further they are a bit basic in ride similar to the old Defenders, personally I don't get them but they do have a following and will hold their price if bought sensible

I have been resisting this in case it cements her decision to get one ... but it could lead her to a no decision as well. I'm off to look for an 80s diesel to try :)

Make your own mind up but this is not encouraging. Usual JLR rubbish quality. And this guy paid £54k for the very basic Defender 110, no options and in basic white. Scandalous if you ask me.

Typical MD response, plug it in and turn it off... next!

They appear not to want to get their hands dirty anymore.

A mate had an old Y reg (I think) G -Wagen. Awful thing. It was a manual diesel he used to tow his speed boat.
Actually the boat wallowed less than the G Wagen!

I drove a 60 plate one a few years ago (again diesel but an auto), other than a bit of a tarted up interior and I'm guessing a newer Merc engine there wasn't much difference between them. Still wallowed around corners and when you went over bumps.
Can't understand why they go for the money they do.

cant view the video for some reason?
I've just double checked on YouTube and the video has been taken down! Wow....maybe JLR asked for it to be removed? Anyway the upshot of it was that he drove his new Defender 110 ( basic model- no options, costing £54k) out of the showroom and 10 miles down the road when the engine warning light came on and the vehicle went into limp mode ("restricted performance" in JLR parlance) . He called out JLR recovery service who tried to fix it but couldnt find the fault. So it went back to the dealers but they couldnt find the fault either. He found that the fault only happened when accelerating hard. So the chap investigated the fuel and exhaust systems himself after googling it and found a small pipe had come detached at the back of the engine which connected to the particulate filter. It also had a melted clip attached to the pipe. He re- attached it, tried to the replicate the fault again but it worked perfectly fine. So now fixed. Yet JLR didnt have a scooby! Very interesting to see that the video has now been removed.

doesn't surprise me at all, I really don't know how the heck LR get away with such shite back up and customer service, lot of these main dealer so called "service engineers" are completely clueless and haven't got a clue how to properly diagnose a problem, they must screw over so many people that aren't switched on, had a similar thing happen on my X5 with lack of acceleration and my main stealer wanted to investigate turbo and decoke the intake by blasting with walnut shells and relieve me of well over £1000, long story short, a bit of googling and £50 part from euro car parts with 1 hour of my time fitting it sorted the problem

I agree with you. If it was me I would have left the car at the main dealers and demanded an alternative under the "fitness for purpose" arguments and also invited the newspapers along to see for themselves. The video was an honest and transparent description of what this chaps experience had been , so a pretty poor show for it to be removed like this.

JLR products and there customer services are just terrible!

If it wasn't for all the guys and gals working there, it deserves to go under!

JLR reliability has always been woeful. When I was in Germany, one of my colleagues bought a Disco, took the train up to Hamburg to collect it, engine blew just as he got on the Autobahn. However, I believe he got another new one that day, can't remember it was 24 years ago but I do remember that the suspension was far better than the crappy 110 series 3 that the pongoes gave us.
