My point is that some stereotypes are genuinely offensive. Some aren't.

C

If history within our lifetime tells us anything its that the difference between your first sentence and your second sentence is 20 to 50 years.

70' , 80's and 90's humour / stereotypes that were not seen as offensive then are now.

Certainly wouldn't argue with that. Same with words.

Is OK to mention Essex and white XR3i cabriolets in the same sentence?

Asking for a friend...

Personally, I think we should rejoice in stereotypes, its called character. Homogenisation is boring, vive la difference as they say in Peckham.

The perhaps-interesting thing about this is one of generalisation. Phil's arguably derogatory comment regarding the young chaps who are the subject of the (presumably semi-scripted) documentary suggests that their carefully trimmed beards and abilities to add an ostentatious flourish to already ostentatious cars is typical of Essex, where the brothers' workshop is located. In fact, at least one of the lads went to school in Pakistan so presumably moved to the UK more recently. From where does he take his inspiration: the mean streets of Ilford or the desire to build a better life, to demonstrate success and to embrace the opportunities they create for themselves. Read behind the gloss and the story is of ambition, motivation and hard work. Nowt wrong with that.

Still not letting them near the Vantage, mind.

I used to have a White XR3i Cabriolet... hmm, there might be something to this stereotype thing after all.
Mate of mine had the inferior XR3 (no i) also in white but non-cabrio. He was about 18 and paying even then 3k for insurance then wrapped it round a tree almost immediately. He'd got a bank loan to pay for the car and next day the bank manager called him and said the bank loan clerk shouldn't have granted the loan given his earnings and they were taking it back. Too late, spent it, bought car, bent it, wrote it off....

Yeah, but it's not like White Gold was based on your life, though, Dan. I mean, if it had been then game over.

You're quite right.

If that show and my formative years were in any way similar then this so called stereotype thing would be more of a literal classification.

Mine was red! With no spoilers or bodykits.

So you were born in Essex and had an XR3i Cab, and I was born in Essex and had an XR3i Cab.

Do you know what, they might be offensive to some, but it does appear there's some validity to these stereotypes.
So I'm not sure if they should go into Room 101 after all. Who's in charge of pulling that lever?

But I have a mate in Hull who had a black XR3i And another in Bolton who had a blue XR3i Cab.

So do does that not suggest that they were a popular car as opposed to conforming to a stereotype?

It's ok. I was born in Essex but never had an XR3i. I did have two Capris, though. Does that count for anything? Also, I wore stilettoes (white), danced around my handbag (also white), love a spray tan and am a regular fixture at the nail bar.

A young Englishman's Etype Jaguar.

But with a far stronger smell of burning diff oil, clutch, electrics, skin. The thing was a menace. But when it eventually went, just gorgeous.

I disagree with the bit about the rigid body. It was pretty bendy.

Well, any kind of bar, really, in your case.

Yes, 100%

There was a mention of Essex, so you're in the club. You're very welcome, go and see Tracey at the bar and she'll offer you a babycham or Stella, they're both served by the pint and the choice is yours.
