Morning. Worked to 1am, back at it at 8 this morning. So much for Easter.

I'll sleep when I'm dead. Which could well be sooner than planned at this rate!

Very satisfying; just been out and burned all the weeds out of the granite sets on the driveway with the big torch!!! Step one in the preparation for doing the inset resin bound stones to the middle later in the year.

Morning all, Newton, I'm late to the phase converter convo. but as I run 3 phase machines at my home, I'll chime in. The static converters are for light duty at most. When using them you must de-rate the motors by 1/3. They use capacitors to kick start the 3 phase motor, then single phase it. Bad for the motors, and yes will let the magic smoke out. A VFD is an inverter that can be used as a phase converter, but it too must be de-rated. The best in my opinion is to go ahead and buy or build a rotary converter. I did, and it was the best thing I did for my shop. Now I can purchase any equipment and run it no probs. They are actually very easy to build. I used a 15hp 3 phase motor, turned by a pony motor, that generates 10hp of 3 phase power with no volt. drop between legs. The 15hp motor functions like an alternator on a car. HMU if you want more info. Ed

Here's a pik...

thanks Oishi, I’ll give the petrol generator a go at the moment, it should deliver good clean adequate voltage. I didn’t pay a lot for the phase converter and should be able to move it on for the same at least after checking it over. It was picked up in Durham when I moved my daughter up there earlier this year. Keeping an eye out for a 10hp single phase motor may take while...

You aren’t wrong, particularly for US single phase, which is 110v, although I know you can have 220v with a centre tapped transformer, but this is effectively 2 phase with a phase angle of 180 degrees.

We are lucky enough to have 240v single phase supply in the U.K and our motors tend to be wound differently in Europe. Most IE2 and IE3 3 phase motors up to 5.5kW (7.5hp) are wound for 415v with star connection and 230v with delta connection, so with a correctly sized inverter drive and a bit of wiring it is possible to run a 3 phase motor at the rated speed and power, albeit with a higher current.

Morning all....Back to work today but only around 5 hours a day. Still have HMPS on site with our colleagues helping them but everyone else is now on furlough and the operation locked down. They have left me as key holder so still going back a forward to the depot and make sure the colleagues left are OK....

Morning Andy, morning all.

loving the weather at the moment, my favourite time of year such a shame we can’t go out and enjoy it...craving a car meet and a could cider in the evening sun.

Stay safe all.

Morning all back to WFH mentality but have the challenge of working out how to pick, pack and dispatch over €3m of stuff that was ordered over a 4 day Easter online sale - people might not be able to shop in store but they certainly want a bargain.

Morning, funsters. That working from home thang again. Today my diary is booked solid from 9 until 3 with just a 15-minute break. I really hope it coincides with when I need a crarp.

More interesting even than the timing of my bowel movements, an update in the Battle for Starling Ridge. After a few days of fine-tuning the defences, I reckoned I'd pretty much nailed it. The starlings still hadn't got in by roosting time yesterday evening, but were determinedly hopping around the roofline trying to find a way in that avoided the gel-pots. One decided to take a break from house-hunting and popped down to the lawn for a juicy worm, where he got promptly flattened by a sparrowhawk.

So, in the fight against stubborn, noisy, incontinent starlings, nature wins. And it won in style. That was a gorgeous sparrowhawk.

Have a good (short) week, everyone.
