Parts are now ordered, mega bucks spent.

Just some small delays in the shipping as items have gone out of stock. Appears a lot of engine rebuilds schedlued for this time of year ready for the show season.

Won't be visiting Migliore until next weekend now so will try to get pictures then.

Parts order from States now on it's way.

Still no news from McGraths, hope not too much of a delay as I could have ordered everything from teh USA but thought keep some of the commerce here in the UK.

Yeah , it's taken in and out with much craning of the neck. I'm sure your mate has similar problems.
Mind you I'm out of practice as she's been away for so long.

Modern house garages won't take many cars, almost useless. I couldn't get a Mk2 golf in there to work on. Still better that leaving her outside. Hope to post more pics after this weekend.

Ok just for you Loz,

Went round yesterday to hand over the parts from the States (MIE). Gotta say they are a well oiled organisation, you have to respect the support they give to those keeping the classics on the road. I know that it is possible to justify the operation from a financial point of view simply by the number of cars sold over there, and therefore the potential demand, but I wish we had it as good over here.
Order sent out Monday and with me on Friday, parts were nice to look at. Oversize pistons, standard size shells for mains and rods. That crankshaft sprocket that gave the guys so much pain to get off, gaskets etc. Means that the machine shop can now get on with honing out the liners.
The remaining pictures show the assortment of parts, most of which will be reused. Items suct as the pistons will be surplus, maybe someone might want them.

Number 4 has some rust damage that you can just make out in one of the pictures (taken from the bottom end), this is where the head gasket failed, If this can be machined all well and good, otherwise it will mean a replacement is needed. The guys had a plate made to assist with the liner extraction, and have decided to machine the liners out of the block. The block and various other bits will be soda blasted to give a clean exterior finish after the initial hot bath to remove all of the crud, so next week I hope they make some in roads.

I ordered some items from McGraths, timing chains, exhaust valve guides water pump rebuild kit being the bits. I'm hoping for some good news on that order so that the top end rebuilds can commence. Light hone of the mating surface, replace the guides followed by the valve seats being recut and the valves being lapped in. Once built up the heads will be crackle finished along with the can covers and any other bits that need it. I'm not planning on cutting back the paint on the Maserati name as this will only promote corrosion and lead to the finish being compromised (it does look good though).

On another point the MIE club magazines are a fantastic read, and well produce,pPlus membership gets you discounts off the parts. I'll keep you all posted with updates as they are fed to me.

Bal,

Khamsins are such beautiful, elegant cars. I am looking forward to hearing/seeing the next instalment.
Thanks for sharing the adventure with us.

Do you really climb out of the window/ tail gate, in your garage? That would be quite a picture (hint, hint!). I have this vision of you exiting, with elegance equal to the car, wearing a dinner jacket.

Best of luck,

David

Thanks for the kind words David.

I don't exit out of the hatch any more since restoring the leather. So it's out of the side window Dukes of Hazzard style. Though not in s Dj or Suit. Though as you say could make for a funny picture. Let's see when she comes back.

I agree it doesn't go with the elegance of the car, but I don't like her being away from me for too long. So this stint at Migliore is the longest since I bought her. (sound like some besotted teenager)

Looks like the McGrath order is ready so will be handing over the plastic tomorrow, which means the items will be with the guys sometime this week. As Frank said, it's all systems go. Though with only 2 months left til the end of the year (and less working days) I may be struggling to get her back this year. I still need the fuel tank off in order to get repaired, need to chase up the guys working on the manifolds and bonnet respectively to give them rocket as they say. They are mates hence why it's not a priority.

Not sure if I mentioned it before but the mainfolds have portions of the emissions control system employed in the USA. At some stage it had been cut and capped off, but is starting to leak. I think it took the form of a pump that connected tot he manifolds to inject air into the exhaust or something like that. I'm having any further remanents removed so that the pipes have a clean flow. May think of stainless to match the rest of the system, but they're in such good condition for a 30 year old car that it seems a shame to throw away.

Looks like I need 2 liners as the one with rust damage cannot be machined out. The second one is oval and again the errors canot be machined out completely. Funny thatthey are both the rear bores on the block (#4 &5), trying to get them from the states as my mate is coming over on the weekend.

All the liners are out and at the machine shop. The heads are also there getting the valve seats re-cut and the new guides fitted. Hopefully this won't show up any further issues say with the valves themselves. So far the measurements haven't shown up anything.

Keep you posted.

Thanks for the up-date again Bal....why did you think it was "funny"...the probs were with those two bores...design issue or something else failed leading to their damage? Worth checking out!

Been a bit quiet since finishing my contract.. I honestly thought I could get more done but can't find time to fire up the laptop.

Anyway the saga continues....

I ended up having to cough up for liners from McGrath's as MIE only had one in stock and I needed two. For items made to McGrath's order for Maserati engines, they needed a fair bit of external machining as the shoulder position was wrong. This was a surprise as they weren't cheap at £340. Strange thing was that they were made in Droitwich (not far) by Westwood liners, but those guys couldn't sell direct to me as the stock was McGrath's. Would have cost me more (and 6 weeks lead time) to have a special order made by them.

All the liner machining is now done to the overbore size. The main parts have been soda blasted as can be seen in the pictures I took yesterday. The heads are off with the machine shop to be put together, then along with the cam covers they will be crinckle finished. The block and the other lower engine castings will be painted a silver engine paint to give them a nice finish.

The bonnet still hasn't been finished, I ended up having to take the grilles off them and have them acid srtipped before being powder coated back to the correct satin black. I shall be chasing up my mate to get the respray completed.

The exhaust manifolds have been cleaned up in terms of having all the connections for the US emissions equipment removed and then welded up. These will be finished white, but I couldn't justify spending £700 to get Zircotec to ceramic coat them. New SS manifolds are around £700 and I'd rather spend the money on them and get them coated. But as the originals are in very good condition I'm going to hang back for now.

So it's all poised to be brought back together, butas Kevin is off on holiday middle of December, there's only 2 weeks of work time left so I don't envisage much more being done this year on the engine. Certainly won't be completely back together.

Mind you where would I drive it at the moment......

Enjoy the pictures.

Its wonderful to witness the rebirth of a car Bal, especially a Maserati, it always costs more than you thought, takes longer than you thought and can be frustrating beyond belief.......but labours of love are always like that!

Good to see your getting there and we all look forward to the final unveiling of your lovely restored Maserati!

Good luck Bal, bet you are looking forward to the new year. When the weather picks up I may pop over to see you as you are not far from me.
