Triumph TR7

Now no laughing please.

As a boy the TR7 was the first car that really caught my eye. I must have been about 8 years old and remember getting the Scaletrix with TR7's for Xmas.

There was a chocolate brown fixed head down the road and I used to cycle down and just stare in awe at the thing. Now we all know that mechanically they were indifferent but the looks could not be dismissed, way ahead of its time and I have always liked wedges.

So whilst on hols this week I bought Practical Classics who reviewed it and told us not to listen to the negatives and that they are easy to work on with a surprisingly good ride and turn in.

I always promised myself one and I prefer the rarer fixed head over the convertible.

Now I feel that most of the issues of the day were down to the legendary British Leyland build quality. Parts are cheap and readily available.

So, I would be interested to hear opinions from people WHO HAVE ACTUALLY OWNED ONE and not hearsay from formed opinions.

I am interested in knowing:
Rust areas
Convertable chassis flexing
Weak points
V8 conversions.

I'll probably only own it for a year to scratch an itch and fulfil the promise I made to myself as an 8 year old boy.

I owned a fixed head a few years ago. 4 litre breathed-on V8 - big valve heads, Typhoon cam, tubular manifolds, big bore exhaust and a 4-barrel carb. About 230bhp in a body that weighed nothing - rapid and fun it most certainly was! Call me at some point, probably quicker than me trying to write it all up. I could probably find you one as a good friend of mine is TR7 mad (owned about 20 at one point and owns the only estate ever made!)

Looks like it has had a piano dropped on it Mark! But I do remember seeing that one in the press at the time...

Back in the day, yes I liked the TR's I remember a friend's brother had one and was going out with the girl next door but one from us and I often used to blag a lift in it; made a lot of noise but fast it was not!

Re: Tr7

It was definitely a footballers car in the 70's. Sammy McIlroy used to pick up his son, Sammy jnr, from cubs (6th Flixton!) in his. For a 10 year old, we didn't know whether to get an autograph or admire the car.

Blimey am I the only one then that doesn't like the TR7..?

I liked the 70s TVR 3000M and Taimar, infact still do - much more desirable than an underpowered BL rust bucket..

TR7 also reminds me of Purdy driving one, and Bodie and/or Doyle in The Professionals driving one and looking out of place being a macho tough guy in dare I say it a ladies car...

Dont do it Matt !! - you were 8 and wet behind the ears.... :mock8:

I quite liked the style of the TR6, I saw one the other day and it was tiny, as a boy it looked massive...!!!

My mate had one - a rare convertible, JOG 14W was the registration - it was awful, leaked water with the roof up or down, got the chicks mind you - but I serviced it and repaired it several times, we always went in pairs as it was so unreliable we needed another car to get back in.

I saw the self same car some 15 years later at classic car event, if only the present owner knew what some virile 20 something year old had de frocked on the back seat - he would never see it in the same light again

I'm not sure if I should post this (maybe Matt/Andy/Benny will pull this post) but I found it while searching for TR7 images, so purely in the interests of 70s car art thought I'd share this.....

Classic and sports car ran a buyers guide a few months back. May be able to find the article on the web.

Times have changed, can you imagine these days car companies employing the same marketing techniques..
