I loved the USSR as a young delusional aspirate.

I went there 1985 as part of my Eurorailing grand tour, not included in Eurorail ticket but cheap to go, got visa well beforehand, loved it, Moscow was ace, had it's darker side, Soviet Taverns, but a shed load of atmos, streets unbelievably clean.

My partner is a Soviet, she didn't like the SU and neither did her parents but her gran misses it, she's 89 and I've seen the cine films of their holidays etc. Everyone looks so happy. You got ur salary, but rent utilities transport etc all free. Salary was for food clothes, hols, car if u wanted one. A lot of control yes, no freedom. But you were looked after from the cradle to the grave. Not all bad, not all good. Would have suited me instead of this constant fight to survive we all have now unless heavily monied, for me there's a lot of positives. Having said that, too much State control breeds contempt and fuels revolt.

I know it's not possible, but it's something to strive for, some sort of half and half. Think it's called Democratic Socialism....

Is it bollocxs. If you lived in such a paradise you wouldn’t be able to afford a Maserati, you’d just be another walking corpse in a grey boiler suit. As everything is free, you would get paid a pittance so you would still end up scraping by, but would have less chance of improving your outlook. Still, you’d be able to elect the money grabbing b4stard grinding you down instead of getting the same one each time. Socialism is a busted flush, the only people that don’t realise that are Socialists.

I seem to recall some quote that says socialism works until you run out of other peoples money..,

I know this is true.

It's my personal schism, Roskolnikovian.

I know my ideals are not ever likely to bear any resemblance to reality but I like to dream.

I can’t be bothered to find my previous “I told you so” comment predicting a certain parties reaction.
They put themselves in a win win place...

I'm thinking more democratic socialism, having lived in Denmark it works there.
But it’s not socialism. Just like in Sweden. It’s capitalism but with higher taxes so most folks have all they need. I think this is the way forward, don’t get me wrong, but asking everyone to pay income tax in the UK. Riots,...

Saw that, quite unbelievable! Attacks are sadly common place, but a Priest? Another boundary crossed :(
Macron has to take some of the blame for this. Trying to cover off the medium/far right ahead of the elections next year has just fuelled the radicalisation.
Sorry, wrong thread. This is why you don’t pander your terrorists - whether they’re ‘actual terrorists’ or right wing nationalists...

There’s a fascinating documentary on the iPlayer called Hypernormalisation that talks about Russia in the 80s. It’s actually well worth watching by everyone, really...
