I agree Miles....After seeing Top Gear and the way it just mashed the 430 I have no a shadow that it will end up being one of Ferraris greatest achievements.....This car is Enzo quick.....Amazing. Got to say it blew me away. If you had bought a Gallardo and was face with the Italie at a set of traffic lights you would feel very small....and I love the Gallardo....

Shak, apologies for missing your earlier question, I've been away - I used a 308 daily for 18 months or so and it was a great experience. They need using, and hate standing still, but a well serviced one will have had most issues ironed out, finishing off Ferrari's development work as it were!!

You'll struggle to keep up with no end of modern hot hatches but it will be more fun! They go well enough and the handling is just great fun, easy to slide and just so analogue! I had an ace blast toe to toe with a 306 gti6 and couldn't quite get past it, but he couldn't gain either - that was ten years ago now though!! IIRC the Gti6 had a Vmax of about 150 so that would add up about right.

There are some dogs out there, and I reckon I'd probably go for a 328 if I wanted reliability, but the unfettered 308 shape is destined to become a real classic in my humble opinion, the earlier and plainer the better, no aerofoil, front spolier and just the pretty little mirrors, preferably with a top-tint screen.... ooohh....!!!!

All of them are easily repaired these days, even 348's have nothing a competent tech couldn't fix, you just need to know it's been regulalry used and certain key repairs have been done.

You do have to get used to the deformed driving position though, GTS & B have a very skeed pedals, GT4's are much nicer to drive from a comfort view. These are cars designed the best part of forty years ago though, so you have to expect a classic experience!

I'd love to tuck one away!

Paco,

Thanks so much! That is very encouraging and making me think more and more as an investment of passion.

I found the following link after reading your reply. Interested to know what you might think of the buying advice which chimes with your experiences and thoughts.

Thanks again

It's a useful guide, although it perpetuates the myth the engine needs to be dropped for a belt service, which isn't true - the o/s wheel arch liner is removable giving all the access needed.

Rust rust rust, is your enemy and can make a 308 unviable. A full respray with some minor repairs isn't going to break the bank, (check out the ALSA automotive thread on PH!) but they tend to rust from the inside out, which might just ruin you! Mechanically they are very durable, and once "right" should give you no grief, mine had carbs and they stayed in tune beautifully. The friction plates in the LSD can corrode if the car isn't used, you'll know on the test drive if you get a grinding noise when turning, easy to hear when parking/manoeuvering, electric window motors are pretty hopeless but there's probably a replacement these days.

A good mechanic is worth his weight in gold, mine was ex-Emblem (the first Emblem) and just ran his own garage, so you'd get Vectras and Land Rovers being serviced alongside 308's and TR's, at thirty quid an hour it made a lot of sense.

now is the time to buy a 328, they are going up slightly, in the last 3 years they have started to creep up in value, in 10 years, a minter could fetch 60K.

The 328 is undoubtedly a superior car in terms of usability and performance, but I reckon early carb GTB's will be sought after and the first to appeciate, if for the purity of the design alone. GRP ones are already in their own world.

If I was taking a punt in financial terms I could be tempted by an Testarossa, I think they've been overlooked and there aren't that many good ones around. It only took five years or so for BB's to double in value, and they're a right pig to own!!

Again, superior cars, but an early TR with the single hub nut and one mirror half-way up the A post will get collectors twitching! Periscopa Countach or Anniversary?

What's wierd is how small a TR looks these days!

Countach looks fantastic and sounds even better but it would never be a car to live with every day with a hot stuffy interior and zero rear vision
