I used to park in the empty spaces just to find someone parked next to me. So now I find the most cared for car someone else pride and joy.

This...had previous cars damaged in supermarket car parks and now also find a decent car to park next to. I always stay away from white vans and 4x4s now and any cars that look like they should be scrapped.

Nothing ***ses me off more:naker: than some knuckle dragger who doesn't give two s**** about there own property so you've no chance, I've even been in the car before know and people have opened the door on you there only reply when you challenge them is "well I've had it done to me" well crack on then that's alright, I went out in the GS on Saturday and parked up in supermarket car park, well away from other cars as I always do, well f!*@ me came back, 4x4 one side and VW, with baby seat in back, the other. They are. I've challenged a driver before who parked really close to my car, then struggled to get out without touching his door on mine. I know, because I watched the whole thing. Given this opportunity to see what made him decide to squeeze his eurobox into a small space, when there were quite literally hundreds of other spaces in a car park only 10% full, he responded, "I always try to park next to a really nice expensive car, since they won't bang their doors into mine when they come back". He wasn't a young man - probably around 60 or so. His car was obviously his pride and joy, but worth maybe £2k. The struggle he had to get out was incredible - I'm certain that had I not been watching, my aluminium doors would have acquired a really nice dent. Faced with people who are on the face of it decent sorts, but who will go to such lengths to avoid any damage on their own cars, I'm afraid it really doesn't matter where you park - either the old chap who wants to protect his own car, or the f*ckwit who doesn't care and will actively enjoy smacking a nicer car (dreadful British disease) will find you.

Confession time.

Last week in my hired 4x4 I parked in a bay...However I noted the fool next to me had parked in a checkered area at 45` to me and I knew he would likely hit mine trying to get out...so elected to move rather than risk it. Frustratingly a car also wanted to use my soon to be vacat spot and gave me little room to get out and foolishly I was more concerned on hitting his car than the other car behind...gave it a little kiss and was fuming with myself. I tried to wipe the scrape off but there was defo a mark on his plastic bumper. I did the honest thing and left my number and an apology.
I heard nothing for three days then got a call...I was dreading the bill (Hire car, full re-spray, loss of work etc etc) Instead I listened to an elderly get (and budgies singing in the background ) who told me he spent the evening T cutting it and got most of it out...he would not take anything from me and said he had some touch up paint he would use on the remaining mark.

He was just pleased I had been honest and wanted to know if I enjoyed my holiday in his village.

So if you see an elderly person with a white Clio in Ambleside with a small scratch on the FOS bumper say hello from me.

This is something I am paranoid about too!! Maybe one of the reasons why in 6 months I have only do e 850 miles!!
As it sounds like me you too are fussy. Let me recommend a bodyshop near Sunningdale in Berks - Fastlane.
They are one of the few places that can return your car back to exactly as it was. I know it sounds a little obsessive, but I always say when it comes to paintwork, the car should not look better or of course worse than before, but exactly the same as before. And that is from any angle or under any light. From what I read it sounds as though regretably you need some paintwork doing, thanks to the careless idiot that hit you, so if you want a contact name etc for Fastlane let me know.
They are the only bodyshop I trust, and they will readily admit I am one of their fussiest customers.
Either way hope you get it sorted....
Regards
Keith

Same thing happened to me in Virgin Active a while back - took me a couple of weeks to finally find out that the cameras had no film, so a waste of time. I got it fixed for £120

A bit harsh

I once turned in front of a car in a van it was dusk, he didn't have any lights on, dark green car and it was in my blind spot , I saw it at the last second , thought I'd missed it but we both stopped , like yours there was a small scuff on his bumper, mine was fine.

I thought great but it could have been worse, asked him what he wanted to do , don't worry about it mate, scars of life , got back in his car and drove off

It's a crappy thing to happen but you may well be amazed at the miracles that Dent Devils and similar can achieve.

Personally I always try and avoid a) car parks in the Maserati, b) parking next to a car with child seats (not because the driver is likely to be clumsy but because manoeuvring a child out of a car is bloody hard. Booster seats are worse because it's quite likely that the child will give the door an almighty shove!), c) parking next to anything that looks like the driver doesn't give a sh!t.

But strangely there does seem to be a tendency to park next to another car even in an almost empty car park Herding instinct?

I think you will be chasing a lost cause with the CCTV, just get a known paintless dent repairer out, pay your £80 and move on, lesson learned.

This ^

Terrible when it happens, and it has happened to us all.

My daughter opened my QP's rear door against a lamppost and did similar damage to you describe. £80 later I defy anyone to find which door was damaged.

Ha, you can't win.

This might explain why, when I park in the totally empty overflow car park at Tesco, the furthest walk possible from the store, when I return to my car there is inevitably one other car in the whole car park - and it's next to mine.

I used to work with a guy, his brother in law was driving, they went to play golf at 6am, brother in law backed his car into a space between 2 cars, if my mate hadn't shouted stop he'd have hit one of them, there were 4 cars in a 200 capacity car park

Offside as she would be sat so you could see her in mirror easily!!!

Thanks all for very genuine factual pointers. I have calmed down and will go down the route of getting it repaired. However much I would like to find the careless culprit I have no time to spare. A day job, own business, wife's business and 5 year twins leave just enough time for a proverbial annual anniversary ****! Life is short, its going by quickly, but its got a Maserati in it :)

Not that it will make you feel any better but i now find myself in the same boat. Seems either a neighbour or somebody on the school run decided to take some paint off mine. :(

Just catching up on this thread, sorry to hear about this Sommi - really s**t news.
But I agree with what many have said, you need to get it fixed and moved on. These things happen whether it be by accident or deliberate, you need to be able to enjoy your car & drive it where you want, not just admire it on the driveway.
I hope you get over it and go on enjoying it as much as you have been up to now
