Is it possible for a workhorse & toy to be the same car?

What about an e39 530d msport my old lump is 20 years old & was showing 55mpg on a run down to Kent recently & will still do double the speed limit?
Snap... almost, mines a 530i from 2002.

I’ve enjoyed reading the points of view on this thread as I often embark upon a similar internal monologue of what that perfect blend of practicality and excitement would look like on 4 wheels.

But for me, I like my QPV because it’s special, and something that ends up making you take the longer route home to stretch her legs at full chat for a few more miles. I love my 530i workhorse because it’s the most reliable dad-wagon I’ve ever had and will have, and I enjoy the fact that it doesn’t have to feature a large displacement V8 to feel fast... the straight 6 in it is a masterpiece and it’s the best looking 5 series, period.

I love them both for separate reasons... and for me a workhorse should be reliable. And whilst I admire them, I’d question whether an all singing and dancing twin turbo RS6 Avant is actually that...

What about a Panamera? So ugly I like them! Very spec sensitive but in the right colour (metallic blue) and the right 19" rims they have a real presence. You can get yourself into a turbo for less than £30k. The 300 hp diesel is also a great drive. Lovely interior and pretty practical. On my short list for next time!
You are the sort of wingman I liked.
Ugly one taken care of.
Doesn’t matter who I pulled, gotta be an improvement.

Assuming a max budget of £70k, and only 1 car allowed, it has to be the GT MC Strad.

2 seat version if you can get away with it. 4 seat version if you can’t.

McLaren 12c... Yep 2 seats but I went from Manchester to Reading and back in a day in one with a colleague and it was pretty comfortable. 8 cyl, neck snapping quick and made a decent noise when pushed but was quiet(ish) cruising.. only issue was fuel consumption.... or 2nd choice would be a Nissan GT-r.. a bit of an acquired taste as far as looks go but £ for £ what a car...

Bentley Continental GT?

If you want more classic options a C36 Estate, Porsche 928 or an E24 635 CSi would be on my list

Thinking about it, 911 has to be on the list doesnt it? Big enough just about for family runs, back seat for shopping trips and bags, okish mpg, light enough but refined enough?

Beat me to it. Any Alpina fits the bill. I missed a D5 Biturbo touring and was kicking myself. They sold 9 in the Uk so a good one is more rare than a blue Stradale...

My current daily. Ticks every box (except perhaps fuel economy). Even has usable Sat Nav, Digital TV, Bluetooth phone (and streaming) all built-in. Fantastic performance without a rock hard ride, superb handling and just drop it into (a very fine) Auto when the mood suits or on the paddles when pressing on. Superb.

In truth any BMW E46 would fit the bill. That is where I have settled. Or as above an E39. Alpina just lifts things up in every important area. I also would happily use a performance quattro Audi from this period.

Might as well say a Ferrari FF.
4 seat hatchback with 4 wheel drive for everyday practicality and all year weather conditions.
Price and economy could be an issue though.
