What to do?

Given that you seem to prefer the 4200 over the GS, you may as well sell the GS and start again with a clean slate. If you can then find a very lovely, late, low mileage facelift 4200 in your preferred colour, buy it and treasure it. But you may be waiting a while.

How about a nice 355? A bit old school now, but still great to drive and very handsome. Quicker round a track than a 4200, GS, QP, GT also, so not exactly a sloth. A blue spyder with tan interior for me, please.

Good idea. This spec is also quite gorgeous, and even better in the flesh than in the picture.

Older Ferraris drive like, well, older cars. Anything less than a 430 will feel slower and wobblier than a MC Shift. A Stradale will kick a 430's pants in all but the twistiest of scenarios.

MC Shifts are such bargains now.

But, Ferraris are bootiful, and you won't loose anyhthing (until the next financial crash).

So it depends if you want a drivers car or a an investment. But hey, what do I know ;)

ADG have a lovely black on black late (2006) 4200 in stock at the moment, looked lovely when I was there.

Thanks for all the comments.

Re budget it would be the GS and or + £25k cash.

Miles have been dropping over the years from a 'giddy' hight of c6k pa to 805 miles last year, half of which were to and from the indi to do service and then another visit. I drive far more for work now and struggle to find time for more... and have not been to Europe this year.

Fezzer may not be an option now looking at how they have jumped again.

4200 is because its a better GT rather than one pretending to be a racer esp on our poor roads.

Sounds to me that you need a change and as you only need a toy I suggest a Ferrari.
Sell the GS now and wait a while and a nice F355 will drop to within your budget.

So it is now close to five years since I got the GS (and 10k miles) and I amd thinking what to do next.

I have had three 4200s/Gs coupes over the last 12 years and enjoyed each one...in fact I would like to own another low miles 42 again... However;

Should I;
Keep the GS and get a early GT or QP
Sell the GS and get a 42 and a early GT or QP
Sell the GS and get a later MC Auto or maybe a Strad.
Keep the GS and get another more usable toy, or;
Go all in and get a Ferrari.

I have been spoilt in the fact the GS has held its money.. I am not likly to get the same result with any other Maser inc the Strad.

Ideas on a post card to...

Peter, maybe it's time for you to try an old school 3200GT, I know you quite like the them!

Before you get too old, as there not easy;)

Very tricky Peter and I am not far off your thinking in a similar boat with a slight difference of route/path in.

All of those are very viable and well thought out options. What kind of use, passengers, types of journies?

Just two in the car (sadly no kids).
Have use of two normal cars, so maser is just for high days and holidays, as will any newer car.

456 are nice but running one makes a G'S seem like a ford.

I agree about older Ferrari’s are going to drive not so great short of a 430. I'm not sure about a Strad kicking a 430's pants. I think you'll find it will be the other way around.

I've been tempted by a 430 for a while but can't quite justify the premium over a slightly similar 4200 or GS. If they were twice the price I could get it but they mainly more.

There are a couple of better value new more modern Fezza models that fit the bill at the moment.

How about ditching the GS and getting a QP then something like an Evora which are pretty good value? TVR?

456's, 612's and 550's must be on the edge of achievable. Plenty of 360's but I don't think that would be a shrewd buy IMHO.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does a low mileage GS + 25k add up to? Is that 60-65k?

That’s possibly a bit light for a really nice 430, but if qyou only need a two seater, and your budget doesn’t stretch to £100k+ my money would either be on a 430, or I’d go British and buy an Aston (v12 Vantage?)

If you fancy something fun, different and available to order new to your own spec, how about the new Alpine?

You've had your fill of Coupes Peter and you like QP's, so perhaps it's time to look in that direction? A late QPV (ideally a 4.7 Sport GTS) might suffice, or you could go next generation with something like this:

https://www.hrowen.co.uk/maserati/used-maserati/quattroporte-gts-id_29677123.aspx

Ferraris are nice and I rather fancy a 430 or 612, but too many Ferraris have been on the market for too long and the bubble has to burst sometime; in comparison I've always said that properly maintained Maseratis are astonishing vfm and I still hold that view.

As for investment value, well if that's a priority it's a tough call. In the past few years folk have gotten lucky with anything from barn finds to concours moderns with various shades of grey in between, but imho that's more down to luck and pumping (or maybe that should be 'pimping') the market than true investment acumen. Given the funds, it's sometimes better to enjoy the moment than worry about later returns.

For a few alternatives have a look at the site below. They don't do 'cheap' but they do have a very nice 430 and one or two interesting Porsches (and the company is easily reached from the M4):

What a Great thread and its always fun spending others money.
A Ferrari is a Special car for sure and glad I did it but from my experience the owners are not as nice the exception being Enzo and Frank.
456 is beautiful but not perfect but was certainly value for money when I bought mine as was the 360.
Personally I buy for the pleasure and the adventures you can have.
If it was about investment I would have sold now.
Enjoy looking Peter and get a nice Range Rover for Winter.

How do you like to drive your cars, Peter? Garage queen and polish, white-knuckle thrashing*, as much as possible whether it's to the supermarket or a weekend away, European grand tour, or something else?

*not a euphemism
