Only heard rumours Enzo; talking to people about changing the clutch myself there seems to be a school of thought it would or could self set and this seems to be what was alluded to... Good find though thanks :)

Interesting Enzo, particularly post No.3. There are some unscrupulous garages that use the SD to tell the system it has a new clutch when it doesn't. Out of range PIS readings are a pointer towards this.

Indeed Miles,
The tech docs i am looking at for the PIS adjustment procedure says ...
"End the cycle by answering the question on whether the clutch is new or has been replaced",

Hmm. Pretty sure that my car would *not* like that auto PIS setting. It gets un happy on repeated start ups.

Enzo, PIS stands for Point of Initial Slippage, it is also referred to as the KISS point, or Touch Point.
the value of, for example, 4.7 or 5.0 would be in millimeters.
The diagnostic tools used to adjust the PIS go through a procedure where the system carries out a series of clutch opening and closing cycles automatically,
with the gearbox in neutral, during which time data is gathered needed to calculate the touch point (PIS) correctly.
The operator will see a graph showing the current PIS position with 2 reference curves indicating the tollerance range within which the touch point curve must be located.

There is an interesting thread on Club Scuderia, which refers to an auto-pis adjustment procedure for a late 2000 F1 360...

http://www.clubscuderia.co.uk/forum...o-PIS-setting/page2&highlight=360+f1+auto+pis

I am in not suggesting anyone should follow the above, but this is the first time I have heard/read that such a procedure exists.

thank you Enzo, so this will / could be a part of the issue with the PIS being way off. I'll get the garage to confirm what my setting is

interesting thread - sounded interesting to the point I was about to get my keys, but when it said about stop / starting the car 5 times decided not to - surely thats not a good idea when cold. As Miles said post 3 was interesting point.

No problem Enzo, hope you find some reasonable answers.

just an update

been told it needs a new gearbox, clutch, bearing and flywheel - WTF did I do to break all this :(

oh and a damage gearbox heat shield not forgetting the 20% VAT which could be the cost of another clutch

Really???

I can get my head around the clutch parts, but new gearbox? I too would be thinking about a second opinion.

Sorry for your woes. :(

Absolutely. Short of putting a bomb inside it, how could it all be broken?

Enzo I would get a second opinion.

Here's a little story why - Another member on here took their car to I think two or three indies who all said that significant part needed changing (cost about £1k + labour) luckily the last Indie they took it to noticed that one of the hoses had a hole in it and that was causing the problem. A hose is a lot less than £1k!

Everyone can get things wrong, I would seek a second opinion.

Enzo, are the garage a masarati specialist? If not I'd get it to one rather than using any of the locals. These things are different enough that they'd confuse the **** out of most of the local garages. The only local ones I'd trust with gearbox/clutch issues are the race teams that run fezzas.

the garage is Maserati only indi and also one that was recommended by a few on here.... so if you trust worthly lot recommended this place, then this must be a good indi....right

just heard that the rest of the car is in great condition, so luckly its just this

would the car be worth more thank normal with a replacement gearbox, clutch and flywheel or would this put people off / money lost. if I sold it in the current condition not sure I would get much for it

The new parts are unlikly to add much to the price of the car as one would expect these to be working in any car. However the new clutch will recover about £1k than if it was worn out

Enzo, any chance you can get it reconditioned instead of a new one..??

would be nice but none around, well maybe soon as mine could be spare unless I can keep it. I would being it home, get a nice heavy hammer and have a little fun..... or cut it open and see how bad

My first 4200 had a new gear box fitted at 14,000 miles, the cost £6,067

I had a bill for my first Maserati of £8500 for a replacement gearbox but that was from the main dealer under warranty

if only....

The bill for the first was just the gearbox, the second higher one inc the clutch and fly wheel, F1 relay.

Hope your bill is much lower as I think I would be breaking my car if this went wrong now.
